Not sure what division Cottbus are in but they've knocked Hannover 96 out of the Cup today & their GK scored a 10 on Flashscore which I've never seen before . I think that ex Posh player Josh Knight is on his way back to England & our other ex player Rikki Jade-Jones is injured whereas his St Pauli team scraped through unlike Wolfsburg who romped home .
Stuttgart 0-1 Bayern at HT in the Super Cup. Mr inevitable with the goal. Edit* Bayern win 2-1. Goals from Kane and Diaz for Bayern.
If we waste money on Woltemade we must be mad, he didn't get a kick tonight. I don't understand the hype around this guy tbh.
Cottbus is 3.Liga. Last season they were into the promotion race for 2.Bundesliga until the end of the season. Actually they're again 2nd in 3.Liga, so it's not really a sensation that they won at home against 96 with 1-0 HSV narrowly avoided a humiliation, equalizing in stoppage time (otherwise, it would have been the first time in DFB-Pokal history that a Bundesliga team failed to score against a fifth-division side), and Königsdörffer scored in extra time to make it 2-1. A miserable performance that further undercut my already low expectations. Unbelievable. I don't know how we'll survive next weekend in Gladbach (or, frankly, the entire season) with a performance like that. A huge disappointment. But the city rival wasn't any better. Had to go to penalty shootout against Regionalliga side Norderstedt (although they had chances for winning 3 matches). Biggest sensaton of the saturday matches was the loss of Nürnberg against Regionalliga side Illertissen after penalty shootout. Here are all Saturday match results of the 1st round: (n.V = "nach Verlängerung" (after extra time), i.E = "im Elfmeterschiessen" (penalty shootout))
And I thought you’d be pleased, at least a bit relieved, by HSV’s stirring comeback. I woke up in time to start watching it around 78’ mark, and glad I did. Football demands high-quality play (and frequently luck) more than any other sport I know of, just to register a single scoreboard tally. (Perhaps field hockey also, but not ice hockey.) It is no wonder that upsets and near-upsets are more prevalent in World Football than in any other sport. P.S. Those loveable Elves visit Ulm later. I hope the home side introduce that long-named dude from the Monty Python sketch during pre-match activities.
Nah, neither pleased nor relieved because we played the same shit as in the pre-season. For Pirmasens it was the match of the year and you could see it. They fighted and although they couldn't anymore in the extra-time (remember they're amateurs and part-time football player) they still fighted for every ball and nearly got the equalizer at the end. Tbh they deserved to go through not my HSV who was phlegmatic for most of the regular time. In the last 7 seasons in 2.Bundesliga HSV reached 2-times the semi-finals (both time lost 1-3 against Leipzig and Freiburg) and both times it distracted the team in the promotion race at the end of the season too much. That's why I wouldn't have been too unhappy if HSV had been eliminated in the first round (okay, it would be a disgrace to be eliminated against a fifth-division team, but whatever), so that we could concentrate on the much more important goal for the club, which is to avoid relegation (yes, I know, that's something you usually say when the club is actually eliminated, but I mean it now, too). What do you mean? Now I'm curious and will see if I can find a stream who shows Ulm (nickname: sparrows) vs Elversberg (nickname Elves? ) edit: Just checked the real nickname of SV Elversberg and it seems it's nearly Elves but (in German) "Die ELV" (and "Die" is the german (female) article not the english "die" so it's "The ELV")
This: Just being silly but I reckon this put Ulm “on the map”, so to speak, in the English-speaking world 45 years ago! P.S. What is it this weekend with newly-promoted 1.BL teams! Köln just surprised more than HSV at the end!
This year was more games but in less time. Couldn't get a ticket for any of the Friday games so started my yearly Pokal do in Lotte, next to Ösnabruck as they hosted Freiburg. Very much an attaque-défense game which wasn't great to watch in fairness. Lotte parked the bus but defended resolutely. Freiburg won the game 2-0. Very small ground. Did a double yesterday though. First went back to Kôln for the first time in ages to attend Viktoria vs Paderborn. Great ground in the forest. Reminiscent of Stuttgarter Kickers for those who have experienced proper grassroots lower league German football. Sadly, the Vik keeper isn't great with his feet so Paderborn quickly scored the opener. The hosts made a spirited comeback in the 2nd half but Paderborn were never really troubled. Routine away win. Then I drove down to Homburg (next to Saarbrücken). Was quite eager to discover this 20k seater (ok, there must be about 5k actual seats but you get the point, it's a big point for a Regio outfit) and I can only describe it as a German Charléty (worst ground in France). Just one entrance, atheltics track, too big for the club playing in it. The locals were up for it though against Kiel but the outcome was never really in doubt. Kiel ran out 2-0 winners. Preferred Viktoria out of the 3. Does anyone know what the rivalry is all about between them and Effzeh? Looked like a big club-small club thing as I saw loads of fans with FCK tops. Felt like they were here to cheer on the goat's little nephew.
BBC have signed a deal to show a live Bundesliga match every week until 2027 on Iplayer/BBC Sport. Announced matches so far Bayern Munich v RB Leipzig - 22 August Hamburg v St Pauli - 29 August Bayer Leverkusen v Eintracht Frankfurt - 12 September Stuttgart v St Pauli - 19 September Bayern Munich v Werder Bremen - 26 September All 7.30pm KOs
Wow, that's more Bundesliga live matches than we get here on Free TV (Sky and DAZN show every match but not for free). We get normally only the Opening match (Bayern vs Leipzig this time) and then one match at the end of the 1st half of the season and one from the begin of the 2nd half (after the short winter break) live on Free TV edit: (although technically it's also not free because of the mandatory fee but I think that's the same in UK with the BBC, isn't it?)
Will be interested to see if this puts a dent in the viewing figures for Friday night Premier League games. I'd imagine most will still choose the PL but the Bundesliga available for free is strong competition for the BBC to have at the same time.
Probably not for the Premier league games but definitely will affect EFL numbers on Fridays . Yes that is right . It’s “free” but not fully ! Do you get all the Premier league games in Germany or just some on pay TV?
Bundesliga also signed broadcasting rights to Mark Goldbridge's YouTube channel. Sign of things to come.
Won't replace traditional TV as it's been granted as rights for a watch-along format which sounds awful.
Football will all be on subscription streaming soon. "Traditional TV" is already breathing its last breaths.
Most of it already is and it's good as we can see far more matches. I was throwing shade at the watch-along format that he's got the rights for not subscription services in general. Watch-alongs are absolute dross and not going to take that many viewers away from TV/Subscription showing just the match itself.
I dunno, these YouTube/Twitch channels are pretty popular. And popular with a young demographic. For some their entire experience with watching sports will have been through these channels. In the end we all talk about the utter drivel the pundits come out with on Sky/TNT/BBC... if anything these channels are trying to be more similar to YouTube. Especially Sky, who have YouTubers on their shows. Also they're done similarly to how e-sports works, which is a huge industry. I don't think these habits are going away.
Only PayTV (Sky) or this DAZN streaming site shows PL matches live and one match a week is on RTL+ which is the streaming site of RTL (which is normally a Free (Private) TV channel (shows Europa League and Conference League matches of Bundesliga clubs live but no CL), of course the streaming is not free. So no Live PL matches on regular TV. ************* Anyway, Friday starts the Bundesliga again with Bayern Munich vs RB Leipzig. At last, not that I'm so excited to see Bayern but the Bundesliga overall. The Opening match of the season will be the only match (aside of the Cup Final) where the National Anthem is played. Don't know why they're doing this because it's only the start of the season but hey, I don't complain . As long as Sarah Connor won't sing it again (insider) HSV just Sunday in Gladbach. First match back in the top tier after 7 years and a few months. Hopefully it won't be a disaster
