Hi, I got a Fiat Punto 55S and its got 83 thousand miles on the clock. now its got a slight problem, Its got a little hole in the sump. Ok so thats a bit major but its a tiny hole. Does any one know how i can maybe cover it over or some way of stopping it leaking oil for a while until i have enough money to take it to a garage? Also does anyone know whether this type of car needs to have the engine taken out to get at the sump as i have been told that the engine may need to be taken out to put a new sump on. which is goanna cost me loads
Depends how big the hole is, if it's clearly visible by just looking around the gasket, then chances are it's quite a big problem and you will find you'll lose oil quite quickly and oil light will keep flickering on and off, until it eventually stays on. Whatever you do, don't drive it with little or no oil in the sump, especially on the motorway or long journeys, as you will cause the whole engine to seize. What size is the engine ? I doubt it will need to be removed, but if it does (and you're confident enough to do it), hire a hoist and do it yourself. And get yourself a Haynes manual if you haven't already got one.
Thanks nah i cudnt do it myself i aint a clue its a 1.1. if u wipe the oil away it comes straight bk out again
If the garage charge over the odds (which they 99% probably will) , just don't bother, you could probably get another cheap run-about for the same money. The way garage's shaft people is unbeleivable - the value of the charge could be worth more than the motor and that's no lie. Vauxhall are a classic example. When I had my first Nova, the heater Matrix was fvcked - basically you get no hot air coming through the vents and being winter, it was a little bit cold. I was quoted £325 (inc VAT & labour etc) for a new matrix. £325. To cut a long story short, I ended up getting the part sent to me from a brokers yard in Scotland for £16, some rubber heater hosing from Halfords for about a fiver and some jubilee clips (about £3) and managed to do it myself ! Just remember not to be taken for a mug and find a small, family run garage, I find they're the best. Don't go to a fvckin main dealer ! They will have your pants down your ankles before you set foot in the building.
Gem you could prolly drive and get the bits yourself...and what did I say a few months back about buying a FIAT.....
Sump covers usually just bolt on from below. Have a look underneath, you'll see if anything else needs to be unbolted first. Either way it's unlikely to involve an engine mounting. How did you manage to get a hole in the sump in the first place ?
