Villa seem to have far too many midfielders, yes some are top quality, and very few quality defenders and strikers. Not exactly a recipe for success is it, unless Gregory plans to crowd out the middle of the park.
To be honest I reckon Gregory has bought quite wisely. The thing about midfielders is that they can often play in a variety of positions as they may have both defensive and attacking qualities. At Brentford, Ron Noades did a similar thing and bought in loads of midfielders. We were getting worried that we were going to struggle in other areas but we moved two central midfielders- Ivar Ingimarsson and Gavin mahon- to centre back and they have been absolute revelations. Likewise, winger Kevin O'Connor has taken a role as a centre forward and we hope he can terrorise Port Vale later today! So, no, I do not think this matters for Villa and they have signed a number of good players!
I dont think that villa have a balanced side.Although we have alot of midfielders i feel the midfield lacks balance in a 4-4-2 formation.Merson plays slightly more on the right and i would only class stone and ginola as wide men so this gives us less width than we should have and therefore create fewer chances.defensively we lack cover for the right back position and wright should never play when we have Barry and Samuel.Strikers we should have enough cover when balabam signs with angel, vassell, dublin and maybe hadji or merson if needed.
in reply to having midfielders as cover for other positions this is true but at the highest level u really need defenders to cover defenders and strikers to cover strikers etc
