Currently watching The Match Revisted from 1977. The pitches are a mud bath and so bobbly. When the pitches are dry some are covered in sand. Is weird watching keepers picking the ball up from a back pass then walking three steps before launching it up the pitch.
last ten minutes of any game a side were winning were dull as f*ck back then, Liverpool were no worse than anyone else, they just won more so you'd notice it more
I remember the carnage when the back pass rule was introduced in the early 90s. Goalkeepers who weren't good with their feet (hence why they were in goal) were suddenly having to hit the ball first time without taking a touch while under pressure from opposing players charging them down. They'd never trained for it, previously they'd have never hit a ball first time during a match because it's more difficult and why would they when they could always pick it up first? The result was carnage and some keepers really struggled with it with comedy results. Stoke keeper Carl Muggleton really struggled with it and there were a few nightmares with him and backpasses that unfortunately don't seem to have made it to YouTube. Or fortunately for him
I watched the old games and you can tell the difference between one Pre-1992 and one afterwards. Players weren't so comfortable in just knocked it back to the goalkeeper once the rule came in! Was there a time limit for how long a goalie could take or limited number of times you could do it though?
