here's one for the proper oldies, in the days before football manager or championship manager existed there used to be a "play by mail" football management game, where you'd post off your team and transfers and get back scores and points by post. It was kind of a combination of fantasy football and championship manager but done by post. Always wondered if others remember this? Before Football Manager, there was play-by-mail fantasy football
I think it was a video of Mad Max and someone had put sellotape across the tab and recorded some film off the box and that advert was on it. So it's their fault innit ?
Not sure if my middle age is playing tricks on me but something at the back of my brain does seem to remember that.
Probably. It was such a common item that in our house it was referred to as "the Ewbank" in the same way the vacuum cleaner was "the hoover".
Spot the ball. What a complete waste of time. It was never ever where you’d put the hundreds of x’s on the coupon.
My Grandma would play it and many times she would ask me to pick the fixtures. She won bugger all and to this day I win naff all on my bets. Pools man would come every Friday around 5ish to collect her form and stake money. If a game was called off the pools panel as they were called would meet to predict the result.
Funny you mention that... This forum started off back in 2000 as a support feature for a website based on Game 34 of Pure Fantasy Football, a play by mail football management game. Game 34 was one of I think 200 separate "instances" all running simultaneously (but at different stages of time). The Official PFF forums were a bit naff, so InSite (Joe?) created this place as a home for the managers of game 34. There were also sub-forums for other games (I think in blocks of 10 or 20, so "Games 1-20"; "Games 21-40", etc) as well as sub-forums for general football and off-topic. Most if not all of the original members of this forum were PFF players like myself. There were other sections of the website separate to the forum for things like team reviews, transfers and other things. After a while though people started losing interest in the game. But the forum evolved, and gained new members from outside of the game. And eventually (not sure when) changed it's name to football forums and got a new domain name to match. I followed that link you put and that first picture is of a teamsheet from PFF! Must be 20 years since I've seen one of those
My Auntie won £13,000 on Zetters Pools for 8 draws, perfect 24 points, which always paid shite, had she done the same matches on Littlewoods that week she'd have won something crazy like £400,000
I had no idea it went on as late as 2000’s, I stopped doing it early 90s as I got to the age I could go out drinking and clubbing (well free parties more back then), just assumed it was a school kids thing that died off in the 90s Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I was introduced to it during A-Levels around '98, and lost interest around my second year at University which would be 2002. I believe it carried on well past that too. By 2002 they'd gone on-line too and you could submit your turnsheet on the website instead of having to pay for a stamp. Blokes of all ages were playing it (and I say blokes, don't recall encountering a single female manager!). You could arrange transfers over the phone with other managers... I distinctly recall my dad shouting up the stairs to me one time saying "There's some Scottish bloke on the phone, says he wants to buy Batistuta off you!" I think my dad was a bit confused...
I remember when I was a kid we used to put 50p coins into the gas meter, and every so often a bloke from British Gas would turn up and empty the coin box all over the coffee table, count it all and for some reason give some back. If they did that now you'd need to sit next to the gas meter putting coins in every 10 minutes . . .
Yeah. loved the gas man coming, as me mum would always share what she got back with us kids always ended up with about £3...which was loads of cash back then for a kid.
I remember it when i was in primary school but never used to do it. I remember playing run outs....does that game even exist anymore? Also for anyone who watched/watches wrestling.....there was efeds that were online. It was basically roleplaying game. They all died but I am sure that was mainly down to copyright issues.
I also remember we had a little wooden box next to the telephone that we were supposed to put 2p into if we used the phone.
