Prior to the first goal I felt we were looking the better team but we make the same mistake, go behind and capitulate. I’d have hoped McKenna had built a team by now like he did in league 1 but they all seem to play for themselves I.e not making passes when they should. He’s earned a full season in the Prem without a doubt but he needs to regroup the players into a team. It’s no surprise we actually looked better with the League 1 players that came off the bench.
We just aren't quick enough around the box. We work a decent position and then delay and in seconds the defending team are all back in position and we work it back and have to start over again. How many other teams get into a position and get a shot away we just aren't at the level. Conor Chaplin's reputation goes up the longer he is out injured.
Kind of sums it up. Ref was 100% homer today. One of those 13 was when Dominguez (?) pushed Ipswich player over with two hands. Definite foul yet when Elanga was pushed over in the same way in the first half, that was fine. Minor but infuriating all the same.
I don’t know how many times we’re going to keep making the same mistakes before the people in charge notice? Standing at the back with the ball, waiting for Forest to press and thus create an opening. Guess what, they’ve sussed it out and are sitting off. Jesus wept. Absolutely terrible today. Rubbish. 4-2 looks vaguely respectable but it really wasn’t. The score could have been whatever Forest wanted. Good luck to them, a proper club with proper support, don’t see that too often these days. As for us, we’ll have to wait and see. It’s been a massive leap for us this year, just too much. If we can hang on to most of our squad and compete at the top end of the Championship next year then fair enough. Still a wasted season however in so many ways.
Nah its not wasted lads. Football is about money these days and the Prem windfall plus parachute payments has set your club up for 2-3 promotion pushes if not a return at the first attempt. You can't play that type of football at the bottom though. We tried it 1st season and got battered upto about October, changed our style and survived.
Sorry to make this about Fulham but this is why I love Silva (and to his credit Cooper seemed pretty good at this for the large part with Forest in this league.) The ability to adapt tactically to different games is key at this level and separates good managers from the poor. Russell Martin was totally found out for being too stubborn, McKenna strikes me as more sensible but hindered by still trying a little too much and a general lack of quality (though ironically in our games he had us pretty much gotten and played us well, but evidently hasn’t been the case throughout the majority of the season). Whereas Silva, since we’ve come up, has managed to fluctuate between playing some lovely football, grinding out results when we need to, counter-attacking in some games and controlling in others, and it makes a huge difference as to staying competitive. Nuno strikes me as similar in ways, he obviously has a distinct, generally counter-attacking style but can vary that dependent on the opponent. McKenna’s yet to work that out, and unfortunately even if he does between now and May, the ship’s probably sailed for Ipswich.
How do you think you'd have got on in 2020/21 with Silva if he'd have been your manager going into that season instead of Parker? I think you guys came into your current spell in the Premier League in a miles better position than we have. Some of that is your recruitment in 2022 which looks incredible looking back. We are desperate trying to catch up and unfortunately the tactic of bringing in the 'Championship all-stars' hasn't paid off in the slightest. I guess the aim now is to go down but bounce back as successfully as you have in this spell and Sheffield United and Burnley will be dreaming to do next season.
Well that's yourselves too tbh, well impressed with your support at the CG x 2 this season and reckon you'll piss the Championship if you do go down.
It makes a difference when a manager actually does his job of trying to get results, even if that means scaling back his principles a bit. Unfortunately now some managers use the high-profile platform of the Premier League as their own vanity project. Kompany getting the Bayern job after relegating Burnley by not changing his approach just encourages managers to look after themselves.
Great win, strange game. As mentioned above - Ipswich weirdly sitting with the ball at CB or GK just waiting for us to move for ages at a time… very weird. We said at 0-0 - we’d be confident of a win if we got ahead, as Ipswich looked pretty toothless, but could we get the lead before we gave away a stupid goal as Ipswich did have the better of the first 30 mins (albeit with little penetration). Ultimately the breakthrough came through some poor defending from a corner, and Ipswich imploded to end the game in the following 5 minutes. Felt for the home fans - we’ve stood in those shoes to some extent the last two seasons, although never to this extent. Really appreciate Ipswich as a club, stadium & fanbase & hope to see you all bounce back soon.
It’s this ‘la Pausa’ nonsense. All very good in theory. It’s become trendy to describe players as over-coached, or just ‘system’ players, but there is definitely a kernel of truth in there. If something isn’t working then try something else, you have to play what’s in front of you. So often these days teams persist in, for example, playing out from the back in some pre-determined pattern, when the opposition have it sussed and are consistently causing them problems. Players need to follow orders and execute instructions but they also need to be able to think for themselves.
