And now he’s team captain! (Penalty kick and 2 assists in Udinese’s Coppa opening match today but against a Serie C club.)
Hardly a promising omen for the newly promoted sides - all three are newly eliminated from Coppa Italia today.
Sad to see Frosinone, on the heels of their huge relegation disappointment (the Udinese home loss in last season’s finale) then struggle immediately, right out of the gate this season, in their 0-3 Coppa home loss just now. (First goal per keeper stupidity, then outplayed for the other two strikes.) See ya! (Well, not, actually, no Serie B broadcasts in USA.)
Whingebag not happy with how things are going. Wait and see if he makes it beyond a season at Napoli.
Lukaku, Gilmour and David Neres to Napoli after the first defeat. Sergi Roberto and Varane to Como after Fiorentina signed De Gea it's almost like playing career mode on Fifa.
Happy to see Udinese equal last season’s home victories today! Thauvin’s beautiful winning tally, parting the Lazio Waters, was at least half due to the visitors’ weak-ish play. (Gawd, they miss Ciro Immobile.). Still, they came close to erasing a two-goal deficit in the last two minutes of 2nd half stoppage time! Kudos to Lorenzo Lucca for the 1st goal on a well taken shot. Take any victories available!
Yup!!! 6W 19D 13L 19 draws set the all-time Serie A record. Should have been a shattering 21 since they lost twice in the dying seconds of stoppage time late in the campaign. Last year’s victories: Bologna the only home success! And so weird that 3 of the 5 road wins were elite Serie A teams: @ AC Milan Bologna @ Juventus @ Lazio @ Lecce @ Frosinone Can’t make this stuff up.
I see, according to Sky IT Napoli is about to sign him, there is a small distance. We will see. Anyway Napoli is also close to McTominay after Lukaku and Neres.
What is going on with Juve’s American midfielder Weston McKennie? After trade rumors, Juve recently re-signed him through 2026. But he hadn’t played a second in Juve’s two Monday Night Calcio opening season matches. Although not reported as injured, I’m guessing he’s mending something. With both matches 3-0 victories, no pressing need existed to put him on the pitch. All that said, why did Juve resign him? Yeah, he’s 25, but he’s not shown much lately. 1 goal and 10 assists in 42 starts the past two seasons for Juventus is not too earth-shattering. Averaging 86 minutes in the three Copa América matches this summer yielded zero goals or assists, and reports he looked “disinterested” and “lackadaisical” in USA’s one victory against Bolivia. (He thought he scored early in the dreadful Panama match, but his teammate was clearly offside in playing the ball back to him for a routine kick into the netting.) Let’s see what happens, they’re paying our American lad €9 million over two years…
McKennie is alright last I checked but Motta is seriously causing havoc with his team selection and who he wants to keep and who he wants gone. Can't believe he wants to part ways with Chiesa who is comfortably the league's best winger.
Napoli just won a crazy game against Parma with Del Prato (a defender) instead of Suzuki (the goalkeeper) for the last 30 minutes. They only managed to score against a non-goalie.
Did I speak too soon? After today’s comeback win over Parma, Udinese now lead the Serie A table! Bill Clinton tells me: it depends upon what the word ‘long’ means. So yes, thanks for that cautionary warning Unca Bill. In 2022, Udinese won 6 straight to have 19 points after 8 matches, as I recall tied for the league lead. From that point: - only 5 victories in the last 30 matches of 2022-23, to finish 12th - a 6-victory season in 2023-2024, along with 19 draws, to barely avoid relegation 11 victories in 68 matches, then, plus some Coppa losses! But 3 of 4 wins plus an early Coppa win to start 2024-25. I will enjoy it while it lasts.
