Hopefully it is just to be closer to her and nothing more worrying. He was interviewed for the Norwich job last summer but I'd assume he'll have his sights set higher.
Yeah, everything coming out this morning, it looks like we've got Will Still. Local journalist says we're hoping to announce our new manager by the end of the week/
What do Bristol City fans want/expect? You're constantly in or around the play offs yet with Johnson and now Manning, you aren't fussed if he goes. Not a dig just a little confusing from the outside looking in.
We want a top six finish, don’t expect it but that’s the aim. Manning achieved that and fair play to him - he’s done a decent job, but the reality is we spent £10m on top of what we had (poorly) and we finished 6 points better off than the season before. Us finishing top 6 was just as much to do with the poor level of quality around us. I couldn’t stand Lee Johnson but he had an absolute fortune to spend and massively underachieved with some great squads that we had. Manning’s slightly overachieved with what we have so hats off to him, as I said he’s done a good job but he’s not worth losing any sleep over if he was to go. He’s got a lot of limitations and faults for all his good.
This season has been less about Bristol City being great and more to do with everyone but 4 teams being shit. Could see why he wouldn't be too bothered, especially if it's not been super entertaining. Bristol City over the years have been a team that have threatened to be good but mostly fall away and finish 11th or lower. Think their best team was probably during 18/19 season. With Kalas, Webster, Diedhiou and peak Weimann.
Sums it up perfectly. Yeah those two years we had some incredible players - Hunt, Flint, Webster, Kalas, Baker, Lloyd Kelly, Bryan, Brownhill, Eliasson, Diedhjou, Bobby Reid, Weimann etc. As I said this year we slightly overachieved - just as much to do with the poor quality around us. Those two seasons in particular we underachieved, because our “head coach” was a complete chancer.
Almost gone a month without a manager. I read only 2 managers for us in the past 5 years have seen a whole season in ? Corberan and bilic. Really need to get this appointment right and target top 6 and get the overhaul of players correct.
I disagree with J - I'd be pretty worried if he goes. It took him a year but he found a system that works than made us a fair bit better than the sum of our parts from January onwards. I'm not entirely confident in our board to be able to pick out a manager who could do the same. I think the narrative that we snuck in the back door of the play-offs due to a lot of shite around us is largely fair enough but you can't deny our form since January has been excellent. Granted the last few games were pretty abysmal but that's because our recruitment strategy is seemingly to have no squad depth at all . I think that with a bit of investment in the squad, getting rid of the few players we've got who have no business in playing the way Manning is trying to play (or are just shite), we could have a really good season with him in charge. Lose him and I could see it going downhill quite quickly with the wrong appointment.
On paper, it seems Bristol City got 6th with one of the poorer squads they've had at this level. No real standout players.
No idea what to make of this or if he's a decent manager? A season (i think) experience in this league will help. Cifuentes has said its tricky to adapt training etc to 3 game weeks and takes some getting used to, so that you can do it efficiently. But it feels underwhelming. However, we have had Sage, Cleveley, Argyle boss (forget his name) and now Thorop all be odds on favourite.
On Thorup, I'm convinced he'll be a success so it's a great appointment. Our failure, particularly in the last third of this season, should have been a lesson for him as it was probably the first major struggle in his coaching career. Not to mention it was his first job abroad. When things aren't going well coaches need their experienced players backing them, he seemingly didn't get that here. Gunn, Sorensen, Hernandez and Sainz all knew they'd be gone in a few months time. Stacey, whilst seemingly a great bloke, wasn't a regular in the side. Duffy is a bit of a dickhead by all accounts. He was getting good performances out of McLean so he was probably onside, along with Marcondes and Sargent (also probably off in a few months). Based on what I saw in the first half of the season I'd have kept him. Most managers won't survive 1 win in 10 but I think Knapper has thrown the baby out with the bathwater. We're happy to let young players make mistakes as they develop but apparently not coaches.
It's probably just the club playing their cards close to their chest and not letting names get out but boy, our search feels like it's moving slowly. Of the realistic names mentioned I think I'm most sold on Ljunders at this point. We can go from having Jurgen Klopp's best man in Wagner to his number 2 of 400 games. Logically that means we'll sign Klopp in a few seasons. Edit - Just as I post this our local press seemingly come to the same conclusion. Clearly watched the same interviews I did. https://www.pinkun.com/sport/norwic...y-ex-liverpool-coach-lijnders-knapper-vision/
