I just don’t think you get the best out of him in the formation we’re playing. He’s a number 10. Anywhere else and he’s nowhere near as effective. That’s why he’s not in the England reckoning, even taking into account his injuries. His competitors in Grealish, Foden and Mount can all play down the middle but can also play in wide positions in a front 3 to great effect. We all know Maddison can’t play wide. I also think even in that central position with 2 strikers he’s not doing as well because in our usual 4231 he’d have a striker and two wide players to play in/off. With 2 strikers, and without fullbacks overlapping, he’s also got less players to play in, so less options. I don’t think anybody is going to be in the market for him though.

I’m not sure we’ll have 50m to spend, but if so we spend it on 4 positions we don’t actually need and gain absolutely no width, which is what we’re crying out for. There’s a reason Albrighton still gets picked and it’s that despite trying Maddison,Perez,Praet and Nacho out wide none of them are wide players.
Wish them all well, particularly Matty who’s had a rough time with injuries. Frees up a bit on the wage bill, but I’m looking forward to seeing who we actually sell.
