I'd say a 6 for us would have been 8 if Zubimendi didn't change his mind because he likes mountains the little fanny. We finally have a back up for Salah so we can keep him fresh all season and got good fees for some of the young lads. Also got a great keeper for cheap so he'll either be Ali Becker's successor or we will make money on him.
How is this list relevant to what @A Gooner said? He said outside of Trent you didn't develop when you beat them. Only Trent in that list, and arguably Gomez who you've slightly discounted anyway had anything to do with the team when you actually won the league. Kelleher didn't play, Elliot did 7 minutes and Jones played the equivalent of two games.
We needed at a minimum a CB, a DM and a forward. We also needed a clearout. We got both, plus a fullback that can cover both sides, and an extra CB. The clearout included a lot of dead wood and big earners. So on paper an 8.5/10. However, not sure any of the players will actually be good, so the 8.5 on the badis our signings will work out and not be injured 20+ games a season.
6/10? We’ve basically bet the farm on Evanilson coming good, so we’ll need to wait and see. We are a little light up front IMHO with just him and Unal. It worries me a little. I never expected to keep Solanke, but it was just getting to the point I wondered if we might. Then things moved very quickly, he was gone for a record sale and his replacement in for a record purchase. We kept other big names such as Zabarnyi, Senesi, Semenyo, maybe Kerkez so that’s good. More to come from them hopefully. We made loans for Sinisterra and Unal permanent which was already arranged and known. Future prospects Paulsen and Jebbison were cheap punts who’ve gone out on loan. Id never have seen Kepa loaned in from Chelsea and Neto loaned out to Arsenal. Random. Hoping Iraola can get a tune out of his former Athletic team mate. The highlight is defence where Huijsen and Araujo have come in and instantly improve us there. It’s always going to be tough to keep us mid table in this league. We have the manager, some really strong areas, but some weak spots too. It’ll come down to putting the chances away.
One of the most interesting points of the summer as an Arsenal fan is the emergence of not only Nwaneri but Myles Lewis-Skelly. Going into the last two seasons it hadn't felt like we've had a player on the cusp of breaking through but I genuinely think these two have a got a real shot this season. I feel the club is reluctant to bring in a big name Partey replacement because the evidence suggests that they feel Lewis skelly could be the guy. Arteta has stated already that he's ready for minutes (very unusual Arteta statement), and noted an importance of not blocking off the pathways to academy players ( again not really arteta's style). Him and Nwaneri got a lot of minutes in all of the pre season games. (Last year I think only Reull Walters went over on the pre season tour and he barely played). Artetas been incredibly reluctant to field youngsters unless he has to (Smith Rowe's emergence being the prime example) especially as we have been battling for a title However if your not gonna give chances to these kinda of youngsters then you might as well not have an academy. I think they could both have really big years which would make the next couple windows a lot easier.
8/10 Trevoh Chalaboh just announced. Great window for us after the initial disappointment of losing Olise and Andersen. INS Matt Turner Trevoh Chalobah Maxence Lacroix Chadi Riad Daichi Kamada Ismaila Sarr Eddie Nketiah Kept Guehi, Wharton and Eze and turned a £23m profit. The only disappointment was not getting a LWB to challenge Tyrick Mitchell, but nothing new there.
I feel like this is the first time in about 10 years that the Palace squad actually looks any different to the season before
Feels like it, although we had a pretty big overhaul when Vieira came in. That's when we signed Andersen, Guehi, Gallagher, Hughes, Olise, Edouard and Mateta.
Quite generous i would say. Arsenal and City have both strengthened their 11 imo and Liverpool haven’t done anywhere near enough to close that gap. Will need to hope the likes of Szoboszlai and Gravenberch really progress this season and that you get lucky with injuries. None of the three world class players have committed yet but obviously this could be sorted after the window. But Liverpool have left themselves in a position where next summer is going to be near impossible to improve the team if any 2 of the 3 leave for free. Should’ve signed a left back and midfielder as a minimum imo. I love Robertson for obvious reasons but his (and Tsimikas) complete lack of a right foot really look like they could be a hindrance in Slot’s system but that may develop as the season goes on i suppose. Chiesa looks like he could be a very shrewd signing and finally adequate back up for Salah. Have soled well, the fees for Carvalho, Clark and VDB were excellent. But the club haven’t done enough imo. I’d say a 2/3. Not that I agree with the points he’s making, but Gomez isn’t arguable. He was the main partner for VVD in Liverpools league winning season. Unless you’re only talking about academy graduates. But that would be unfair. Gomez played less than 30 senior games in the Championship when Liverpool signed him and then spent 3 seasons developing at Liverpool before that league winning season.
We won the league how long ago? 5 years? We are not allowed develop players since? No team is frozen in time. BTW got any more youths we can pinch? It's our thing. My point was maybe arteta sees the team he has as fairly ideal and wants to develop the kid at 8 and move rice to 6. Maybe he has a grand plan there and he is happy with his window. Same for City. Maybe they are happy to bring more fodens through
Did klopp put gomez it at rb with trent to develop both amd then move him.to cb after? I'd contend he did and it brought gomez back up to speed rather than just cast him aside
I’d give us a strong 8. Shame we couldn’t get another no.9 over the line but they’re not easy to come by. Greaves, Clarke, Hutchinson, Delap especially, some great young talent there. Still a bit weird to see us actually signing good players and finally breaking the £4.5m record transfer
On paper we did as much as we were ever realistically going to. Shifted a lot of dead wood and fringe players. Brought in 2 CBs, a midfielder, a forward and a full back. Should be an 8 or 9 out of 10 if signings proved reliable and an upgrade Personally have hesitations over the fitness record of those we have signed however. And the others they are inexperienced so it's a coin flip they actually end up being improvements. Looking back in a year or two time I'd imagine this turns out to be a 6 or 7 out of 10 window
Still missing the point, unsurprisingly. @A Gooner is saying that the way to overhaul us is by doing what Liverpool did when signing Alisson and Van Dijk - getting established World Class players in that are going to improve the first XI - and not simply signing good players that are going to add squad depth. It's baffling why you're so concerned about his opinion of his own club's transfer window anyway
I just felt calling improving his team and getting rid of nearly all the players he wanted rid of just a 7/10 a bit surprising It's not just about getting world.class players, they have to be available and affordable. They've already made their decisions on raya, rice, havertz and added quality players to it again With the money available. I don't know who these world class players are thst are available Anyway all arsenal.need do is be second best and when city get their 80 point deduction then they win by default.
Decent window for us, losing Toney will hurt but was inevitable, ended up getting a decent fee for him. In terms of incomings, some really promising young players, though no players who really come in and instantly improve the XI IMO (outside of Thiago who is unfortunately injured till next year). Thiago £25m rising to £35m Carvalho £20m rising to £27.5m Van De Berg £20m rising to £25m Meghoma £5m rising to £10m Gustavo Nunes £10m rising to £12m If I’m being greedy would have been nice to get a proper CM, which we tried to with Gray and Cajuste, but it’s a good window overall. Has the potential to be great if Thiago, Carvalho and VDB live up to their fees. Will give it a 7/10 for now though.
I'd say a 4. The squad isn't weaker. Chiesa is a smart low risk, high possible reward signing. There's been no major outgoings. The DM is still a question to be properly answered, but there's footballers at the club who seem like potential answers in the long-run. We have some succession planning for the goalkeeper position. Hopefully Bajcetic and Doak have successful loans. The sales have made sense for the most part. Carvalho, Clark, VDB - it would have been nice to see them make it in the team but ultimately when would they have played? My major gripe is that the three big contract issues have not been sorted and tbh it seems plausible at least 2 of them do depart in the Summer. I think TAA needs to be boxed off ASAP. Especially given Real Madrid can officially make moves in January and have Bellingham spilling poison in his earhole. The other two it probably will be one or the other. Hard to know which way to go tbh, both incredibly hard to replace. The contracts can be sorted post-window but given it wasn't a busy window, why was there seemingly no movement on this? Missing out on your priority target so publicly is also a pretty poor showing. The Gordon/Gomez collapse. And the weird carry on re Valencia/Bournemouth felt unnecessary. The recruitment needs to get things settled with incomings because it felt a bit messy. I never expected a big window as the squad went into the season in a good place. Had Klopp stayed I'd have backed them to push hard in the title race. As it is with so much in the air, it feels like a top 4 consolidation season with hopefully a decent push in Europe.
Not worried about anyone else's business nothing has moved the needle for me and I back our starting 11 against anything.
