Nearly the perfect away performance from Tranmere, but we get out of jail thanks to a cracking strike from Kyreece Lisbie very late on. Tough few games coming up now.
Full time 0-0. Definitely take that. Sounds like a typical latics performance under mellon. Tight at the back, but struggling g to put it in the onion bag. Can forgive them that today though as better teams than us will go to MK and get beat. Still of the mentality we are a good few weeks behind everyone else, so picking points up throughout August is key to keep us ticking over.
Missed a lot of the game, but saw the end and I thought that had all the hallmarks of a gut wrenching late equalizer. Thought we looked OK. VDC looked alright from what I saw, one very good tackle near the end one of their lads looked through, but deary me he had to get that right. Barrow a typical L2 hard to break down well drilled unit. You'd like to have carried more threat when 1 down if you were them, but I suppose it's still game on at 1-0 but concede more and it's not, so you can understand I guess. I think they'll be more than fine. Opening day win will do me!
Magnificent performance from Crewe away at Salford. They had a penalty saved early on but they were lucky to only lose 3-1. We played fantastic football in the first half and kept them at arm's length in the second, while coming close to adding another couple ourselves. I'm not going to pick out individuals because everyone played well and if that's the kind of football we're going to play this season, I'll be a very happy man.
MK Dons 0-0 Oldham Will take it. Fair result in a game where not a lot happened (1 shot on target combined). Typical first game of the season. Important thing was not to lose, a point on the board etc etc. We have now played 5 league games under Paul Warne and we have yet to concede a goal… MK Dons 0-0 Oldham Athletic Swindon Town 0-0 MK Dons Crewe Alexandra 0-1 MK Dons MK Dons 0-0 Grimsby Town MK Dons 0-0 Newport County The great entertainers at the moment! Funny how we’ve suddenly become so solid at the back since he came in given we have previously been shite for years at the back. We have excellent firepower up top now too so you would assume once we get going we will blow some teams away…
Took us 10 matches to win last season, so happy days getting off the mark straight away this time. BST Us are so back.
Improved second half, not going to lose too much sleep over that as we've at least shown we can go to some tough places and compete. Rakeem Harper in the middle was our best player, and him aside the team that finished the game looks stronger than the one that started it. Only real chance was Cameron through on goal, not going to criticise him too much, good goalkeeping, making himself big. Chesterfield were as I thought they would be, a good side that might be a few games off fully building up a head of steam. Dunkley was huge at the back.
Pleasantly surprised with the win. Expected nothing today and expected a lot more from Salford. Didn't expect us to have 22 shots, have 3 players that know how to cross a ball and score 3 goals before half time! Excellent penalty save by Boothy as well which was justice as Mickey was clearly fouled initially. Six of one half a dozen of the other those are never given. I'm the biggest critic of our midfield but thought Thomas had his best game in years and was Lunt's best performance for us so far. Sanders dangerous from corners too. Not getting carried away as we're still short of bodies as were Salford. But that was attacking football, four at the back and looking to kill the game off. All we ask for as Crewe fans after 18 months of turgid hoofball, five at the back and safety first. Tommi O'Reilly is some player going off that debut performance too. My MOTM today. Shaded it ahead of the impressive James Connolly and the hard-working Josh March.
We’ve missed big Dunks, was colossal today. Personally think we had a stone wall pen turned down just before that one on one you had that you’ve spoke about, so my head would have flown off had you scored then
Played 70 minutes with 10 men and managed to get the 3 points. Aden Flint was absolutely superb today at the back.
Great performance from us today. Off to a very fortuitous start with the penalty, which Crawley have every right to be fuming about but otherwise they were well beaten. One of those days when the whole team performs well. McEachran absolutely purring and the three forwards all causing problems. Vernam was giving their RB a torrid time and Burns looked far better than he has so far. Subs all impartial too and great to see Brown and Gardner get on the pitch. Could have and probably should have been 4 or 5-0.
Mixed emotions after that, the sort of game you hope you can grind a win out of given the dominance and the fact Newport wouldn’t have created a chance from open play if the game had been played until September. Plenty to be positive about, far more direct and attacking than any Maynard performance last season and felt the new signings all did well. Clearly missed a difference maker off the bench (e.g. Jatta, Jarvis) as Dennis, Jones and Iorpenda had ran out of steam after 70/80 minutes. Overall? Jury’s still out on Patto’s Magpies. Maybe good maybe shit.
Not sure what to make of them game at the Hive today v Fleetwood. Had most of the possession, keeper made a comedy mistake for the first goal. However we had plenty of time to rescue it. Fleetwood picked up the misplaced passes hit us on the break a few times. Thought they looked better up front than us but we're lacking options. Solid away performance from Fleetwood, defended well, loads of blocks and pounced on our short passing.
Very happy with that start, a very comfortable win really, just couldn’t get the second to make it the walk in the park it otherwise was. We looked strong, organised, up for the fight, and in small flashes looked very handy. Knight and Kai Kai on a different level and Appere had a good debut; strong, intelligent and great at bringing in other players to the attack. We will have much more challenging games I’m sure, but feel we’ve also got a lot more to give when the group gel a bit more.
Shocking game at Cambridge. Really scrappy. Cambridge deserved the win because our crossing and passing was nothing short of laughable. Their goal looked offside, but it was they who probably deserved that bit of luck in the end. We're always shite on the opening day though, so definitely not going to panic
