Just seen Maynard appointed. He was at our place on Monday when we played York... thought we might be lining up to replace Ardley (I'm very glad we didnt). Firing had clearly already been in the pipeline
That is a shame with the money York has we at least could have e had a week of speculation. certainly this instant appointment does highlight the York fan saying it was ‘in the works’ but I still feel it’s more of an owner change than mutually agreed, this must have been agreed before the departure was. I am sure this was owner wanted the change after poor start he didn’t do that bad at notts and he knows this level are the plusses.
Bizarre behaviour up at York. Wish Stu all the best, seems a nice enough guy, but the Notts job was always too much of a jump from Wealdstone for him. Never managed to make the transition from the ‘mid-table consolidation is a huge achievement’ mindset to do the things you need to do to have a shot at promotion.
That's an appointment that might make the other 23 clubs fanbases in the division happier that York's.
**** sake that is a series of horrendous decisions by Uggla. Hinshelwood - fine, maybe the rumours of issues behind the scenes warrant this. But Maynard… Stuart Maynard?! Ffs! Maybe he’ll be backed to the hilt with so much Uggla family money that it’s all but impossible to succeed but still. Awful.
Maybe this is a useful middle ground for Stu between Wealdstone and Notts? Here he had free rein in terms of incomings and outgoings, provided it was within budget. At Notts, he was the head coach so was nowhere near as involved in the recruitment aspect. At York, he should get more autonomy on that front. His playing style is similar to Hinshelwood, although when I did see Notts last year, the possession based football was overkill at times. That's something he's got to learn from and be willing to be more direct, especially with the pace York have in attacking areas to get in behind defences. Interestingly, the story goes that when he left us for Notts, he recommended Adam Hinshelwood to be his successor, but the latter didn't take up the offer due to our budget (or lack thereof).
It was the home record that ultimately did for him here I think, and that way of playing was a big part of it. We were actually pretty good away last season and if the records were swapped round he’d probably still be our manager, but you can’t lose more home games than you win over eighteen months as one of the promotion favourites, and that’ll be even more pronounced at York with the lack of promotion places.
Fair play, that’s very funny. I don’t think Maynard is a disastrous appointment, don’t get me wrong, I desperately wanted him sacked much earlier at Notts. He is a weirdly steady hand though, sets teams up pretty sensibly to dominate possession and be reasonably solid, which might be enough for a team like York. He just can’t adapt and doesn’t have any sort of tactical nous or game management - he effectively got ‘out managed’ by any decent side or manager he came up against. Joao Alves as assistant is a lovely Easter Egg too.
As always, there will be 2 groups with potentially different opinions on a managerial appointment. Stuart did an outstanding job for us at Wealdstone and it was inevitable he was going to be snapped up by a bigger club. We're not joking when we talk about the constraints we have to operate within but Stuart embraced them and found solutions that meant we punched way above our weight. He operated with a budget that wasn't even mid table in the NLS yet got us to a 13th place finish in the National League, ahead of clubs spending massive amounts more than us. To do that he had to box clever and come up with a system that got the best out of our squad and gave us the best chance of competing. That takes brains and acumen and those with football pedigree - qualified coaches, players, officials - all see that in him. Speak to most players who have played for him, see what they have to say. Fans just see "ex Wealdstone" and "sacked from Notts County". The guy is a real talent. You can buy your way to success or you can manage your way to success. Stuart was a stark contrast to Dean Brennan at Wealdstone who spent his latter days at the club moaning on social media about the lack of money and resources. Stuart just got on with it. When Dean had his head (initially) turned by Barnet, Stuart insisted he was staying, when there was far more money and resources on offer over there. Wish him every success at York, they've hired one of the good guys.
