The only reason I can see for excluding darts is that it's not global enough. It's only really in Britain and the Netherlands where it has a big following and as a consequence the players are almost completely British and Dutch with the odd exceptions. I don't think there's enough global appeal or global strength in depth for the IOC.
Well Ireland as well but ya thats not going to convince the money men at the Olympics. Could allow a few sports that don't make them money though seen as they don't pay their athletes and hardly struggle for money.
Watched the Rugby Sevens, GB 21-0 down to America and they were going out. What a comeback to win 26-21. Another cracking game with Argentina beating South Africa with the South American's having had a man sent off after 2 minutes. Semi finals in the early hours though want to avoid the scores as recording the matches.
Superb relay gold in the 4x200 freestyle. Close for the first 2 legs but really pulled away after that almost breaking the world record! Excellent performance! On the other had a disappointing day in the rowing - just one silver with 3 boats coming 4 - including one being pipped by Ireland for 3rd.
Brilliant results in the swimming, what a brilliant job we're doing in the pool. As you say though disappointing from the rowers who are usually amongst our strongest performers. The men's four was particularly hapless as we steered off course and came close to crashing into the Italian boat! I suspect there will be some inquests after that. In non GB news, Simone Biles seems to be having some sort of mental breakdown and has pulled out of the gymnastics all around final too. Very strange goings on.
I know a person's wellbeing is more important, i can just never help thinking that later on in life she'll look back and regret not competing and trying to add to her achievements. Sent from my Pixel 4a using Tapatalk
Artingstall through to the semis in the women's boxing, go on girl. Sent from my Pixel 4a using Tapatalk
In fact, the more I think about this the more selfish I think it is. She hasn't suddenly had this breakdown since the Olympics started, if things are bad enough she needs to withdraw then she hasn't been in the right frame of mind for a while. Someone else missed out on a place in the squad - and a chance at a medal - for her to go and just drop out. Sent from my Pixel 4a using Tapatalk
Mental health is a difficult issue in many ways. The very nature of mental health problems mean that they can cloud logical thinking and affect your decision making process. It could be that she thought she'd be fine, then arrived at the games where it was too late to get a replacement and the issues developed and she tried to fight through it but wasn't able to. It's also difficult because it's different for every person and it's impossible to compare from one person to another. Some people can deal with certain issues and take them in their stride, others are floored by them. We also have to remember that she is an abuse survivor who was sexually abused as a child by her former coach. Those kind of demons often never go away and often manifest themselves later in life as mental health problems. Maybe it could be playing a part in what she's going through now? Who knows. I just wish her the best and hope she can sort herself out and be ready to compete in the individual events. It could be cathartic for her if she can take part and win gold in the first one and the rest might flow after that.
See sense in both of those posts, was just coming on to say it does bug me when Nadal, Murray, Federer etc. Enter Major tournaments with no real plan to see them through. Give someone else a go. Whilst I agree on the mental health discussion, surely the people who are supposed to be looking after her should have stepped in here.
Been reading about the sports that were in the early Olympics. Gliding in 1936, fire fighting..... i kid you not in 1900, tug of war up to 1920, pigeon racing in 1900, life saving and croquet in 1900. Oh and cannon shooting. Now that i would love to see make a come back.
Same here. I understand there is a skill to it, but why are there animals competing at the Olympics? There is no camel racing or sheepdog trials. If we have horse events, why no polo?
Hehe, nothing against Dressage. It's the only olympic "sport" that's nearly a secure gold medal for Germany We just won the 14th gold-medal in the team dressage since 1928 (so it was said in the news. I didn't know that because I don't watch sports where animals are involved. ) And today we won Gold and Silver again in the solo dressage. So from our 3 Gold medals so far are 2 from Dressage Sometimes I think it is only at the Olympics to please the Germans. It's something that is ideal for us. Clear Rules, discipline and order! But for what it's worth, I don't understand this "sport" either. Can't watch it (just mentioned it) and clearly have no clue what they're doing there exactly! Polo was at the Olympics until 1936 in Berlin I just read (not at every Olympics between 1900-1936 though) edit: Here's the wiki-link Polo at the Summer Olympics - Wikipedia
Not convinced that darts in the Olympics would work either way tbh. Not enough global presence on one end, not really convinced that Olympic darts would have the same impact on a fan basis either. Can’t imagine fancy dress dinosaurs at Paris 2024 would really happen
There has been a huge drop off in the rowing, which was expected. The same expected in the cycling. They must have been our 2 most successful sports these last 2 games, especially track cycling the worst thing is the Aussies are taking those golds back, that we initially pinched off of them the last few games
