While many may hype the Premier League as the best league in the world, we don’t actually show this in Europe and players in the premier league never seem to be considered for the Ballon D’or. However, could that change?

I hadn’t thought about it until three comments I heard about Mo Salah, before and after yesterday’s game against Roma.

First, was Frank Lampard before the game, saying that to compare Salah with Ronaldo and Messi is laughable!

The second was Stephen Gerrard, after the game, acknowledging that Messi and Ronaldo have consistently performed over many seasons, but that RIGHT NOW, Salah is the best player on the planet

The third was from Robbie Savage on the radio last night (I heard on the news thins morning), echoing what Gerrard said and suggested he should win the Ballon D’or

I agree that he cannot fully be likened to Messi and Ronaldo until he has played several seasons at the level he has played this season. However, I also agree that he is the best of the best at this time. The Ballon D’or is not about what players have done over a long period, but the player “of the year” and IMHO, he has been just that!

Salah is now joint favourite, with Ronaldo. It is quite possible that they will face each other in the final!

Of those two, I think Salah wins hands down, because as brilliant as they both are at scoring goals, Salah is much more of a team player. Take last night’s third goal. Salah, on a hat-trick, clean through. I am sure I wasn’t the only one expecting him to just move it onto his left foot and bend it around the keeper. Instead, he goes right foot and lays it on a plate for Mané. Ronaldo wouldn’t even have know Mané was there! In addition to 43 goals, Salah has 15 assists this season, compared to just 7 from Ronald

Could the Ballon D’or be heading to the Premier League? Should it? Do you think Salah has been that good?

Of course. If not it only means that Bayern failed today and in the 2nd leg in denying Ronaldo another final and CL crown ( I am pretty sure that in the final they (and especially he) will win it again

Yeah, he's that good in this season and as you stated rightly the Ballon D'or is an award for the actual season/year and not the seasons before. I'll keep my fingers crossed

Ronaldo has been excellent since 2018 started to be honest. And Messi is... well, Messi.

Personally, still going for La Pulga at the moment. He is having a more demanding role with each passing season and is still coming up with the goods most of the time.

    Most of the time?
He is special, I agree, but Salah has just done it game in, game out!
Messi has done so inn the past, but not so much now

Obviously Salah has been amazing, it's rare that he doesn't score in a game now, sublime finishes & quality assists. But he has to win the Champions League to have a chance... Messi & Ronaldo are still considered better than him, they're bigger names who're playing brilliantly themselves, & only those 2 have won it since 2007 despite great seasons from several players. So it's clear what he's up against, he has to have a massive year to get it. The World Cup will also be big for the voting & Mo is gonna struggle to get far with Egypt but if he does that's another big feather in his cap. Hopefully he wins it but it's early days & he still has alot to do.

He will win the Pichichi in Spain and be on top of the assist providers list, and is Salah's only competition for the European Golden Shoe now - two goal deficit but two more league games remaining. For sure he is not hitting over 60 goals like he used to but considering he is having a deeper role now as well, I'd say Messi is definitely doing it game in game out too. At least that's what I have seen from watching him and Barca this season. The circus in the CL quarters put a real stain on them though that's for sure. :(

Salah should deffo have a shout but not as though Ronaldo and Messi aren't in with a shout as well.

Them winning it would also be based on fantastic performances also.

It depends on where the trophies go. If trophies were irrelevant, I'd be giving it to Messi. However the Champions League does have it's importance. If we just go by league, CL and domestic cups (plus the CWC for Real):

    Salah - 43 goals + 13 assists
    Messi - 39 goals + 18 assists contributing to 2 trophies won
Ronaldo - 41 goals + 8 assists (if you think the Super Cup and CWC are trophies then he's contributed to 2 trophies won as well)

For me, it's Messi. A CL win definitely gives it to Ronaldo (he's on course to break the scoring record again) and I think a CL win for Liverpool edges it for Salah.

Whoever wins the CL out of Ronaldo and Salah will see who wins it imo.

It's a bit annoying to me how overvalued the Champions League and World Cup are when these awards are being decided. If you look at how these players have actually performed on a game-by-game basis, I don't think Ronaldo should be winning it over Messi or Salah, but I suspect that's exactly what will happen.

The problem with seeing what trophies you win is that this depends largely on your team! Barcelona and Real have far bigger budgets than Liverpool, so Ronaldo and Messi are surrounded by bigger names!

The Ballon D'or should be about the individual, not the team! Ronaldo and Messi have played a part in trophy wins, but they haven't won them on their own!

Also, don't rule out Lewandowski sneaking into that top 3. He's got 39 goals this season and could still win a treble, which none of the others candidates can do.

Right now I'd say Salah deserves the Balon D'or, but there are still 8 months left of the year yet. Salah's form may be nowhere near as good as this season's next season.

I hope Salah does win it, it would make a change from the usual suspects.

Yeah, agree. I'd like it if he kept his form at the same level as this season for at least one more season too, might help give Manchester City a title challenger.

Fun fact: Ronaldo and Messi are now the only active players who have ever won a Ballon d'Or or FIFA WPOTY. Pretty ridiculous.

That's more like a depressing fact. Ronaldo in particular hasn't really deserved a couple of his.

I personally don't think he should have won the last two, but I would have just given them to Messi anyway.
