From who I've seen play. Not in order: Tony Adams Sol Campbell Alessandro Nesta Nemanja Vidic Carlos Puyol Jaap Stam Marcel Desailly You can make arguments there are probably much better defenders that have played the game but I just haven't seen them play unfortunately.
Tell me how he isn't one of the best of all time. His trophy haul is probably up there with the best. He has been an important player for club and country. Do you really play over 500 games for Real Madrid and 140 games for your country if you're bad?
All that aside though anyone who has seen him play and still calls him a great defender is a ****ing moron
I don't know how he isn't. Did he accidentally play for a defence that allowed 5 goals and kept 13 clean sheets in 18 games during the 2008/12 Euros and 2010 World Cups? Only missing one game in those three tournaments.. Spain didn't keep a clean sheet in that one game either. La Liga best defender 4 times on accident? As a joke? La Liga just taking the piss? A World Cup dream team, and a Euro team of the tournament for shits and giggles? Six time UEFA team of the year because of his beautiful face? Carlo Ancelotti compared him to Paolo Maldini. My only worry with him on my team is the red cards, but if I need a 90th minute goal and he hasn't been sent off yet, then I'm feeling pretty confident.
Maybe on my own but I personally think he is a piss poor defender when compared to some of the greats mentioned in here, he isn't even in the top 2 cbs at his club imo.
Ramos is a game winner and a great footballer, but at best is an average defender. Nonsense to consider otherwise
It's bad to have a centre back who got mugged off by the likes of Danny Welbeck and Iago Aspas in an all time CB lineup...
1. Baresi 2. Beckenbauer 3. Scirea 4. Moore 5. Pasarella 6. Figueroa 7. Nesta 8. Bergomi 9. Koeman 10. Kohler
I never said that he is a bad defender ... he is one of the best in the current era (although today the standard about defenders is very low) ... but in a high standard Sergio Ramos is only in average level in my opinion. I don't think he is top 50 in central defenders, maybe between 51-70. On the other hand ... I just evaluate the individual performance ... it is already taken into account the performances in critical and important moments, even the finals but the trophies are not necessary because those are won by the team. My personal criterion is: 1. Highest peak 2. Characteristics of the player 3. Consistency throughout the career 4. Regularity and constancy 5. Impact in the respective time 6. National team (performances not trophies). Actually I consider Carles Puyol, John Terry, Río Ferdinand, Roberto Ayala, Lúcio over Ramos very clear.
