(MADRID) good football city to visit? thinking of booking a short holz to follow up my lovely Barcelona venture last November. but gonna try for September so I get glorious weather (because a couple of days it was poor weather in barca). wanna hinge it on a Football match obviously. a little bit of the poncy stuff like visiting local landmarks might be cool plus the good old boozing. hopefully the weather is nice. not bothered about restaurants- I had a KFC and I ate twice in burger king during the 4 days i was in Barcelona and was more than happy I'm thinking the competitors are MADRID, MUNICH, ROME, MILAN, or PARIS (which is probably a little Eurostar detour for me). I hear bad things about Italy and racist culture so i'm worried I might get battered especially if I go to rome. I don't speak any foreign languages bar a smattering of GSCE german I remember. so thats an issue. most people in barca spoke english so i was fine. in my heart at the moment Madrid is winning. really want to go to the bernabeu. in an ideal world if I could tweak it so they play a league game on Saturday and a CL game on Tuesday that would be awesome. could go to 2 games. advice.....
Milan is great for weekend. Nice city, good food, amazing stadium and brilliant atmosphere if you go in with the ultras, although it can be a bit intimidating, probably more so if you feel you'll stick out as a foreigner. Obviously the Milan club's aren't what they used to be on the pitch too. Not that many people speak English, so basic Italian would help, but I think you'd get by alright just for a weekend. Mine is pretty limited and it was fine.
Give Lisbon a shout. Bit of a lower standard than the big 4 but a nice city, nice stadium and still a big club in Benfica/Sporting Lisbon.
well if I was going to do that I might as well go for a Madrid/Lisbon combo. I wonder if I could get a bus from Madrid-to-Lisbon??
I loved Madrid and the Bernabeu was amazing. Madrid, like most cities, is easy to get around and the metro station is right near the Bernabeu. I have been to Rome and loved that too.
what I reckon I might do now is if I can't do a real Madrid double I might try and real-atletico combo. see when real are playing on a Saturday/sunday and then maybe if atletico have a CL game on a Tuesday. if I can find a week when that occurs I might go for that. actually might get greedy even try and basketball game as well if I can. know Spanish basketball is quite high quality. Barcelona metro was piss easy. 10 euros for a ticket. 10 journeys wherever I wanted (effectively the whole city as long as it was one trip). lasted me the whole 4 days I was there. is there a similar arrangement for the Madrid metro.
actually when are the La Liga fixtures out? This is annoying as I obviously can't book until they come out. what is Madrid weather like in September time?
They were announced 24th July last season, so I imagine it would be similar this year. Average temperatures for September in Madrid are a high of around 26c, an average of 20c and a low of 15c.
I can eat all the food I want in England and have a paella if needs be. don't give a shite about going to poncy restaurants when choosing a country to visit. Prefer spending my money on actual touristy things I can't physically see in England. pretty logical approach really. #KEEPITREAL
I am going to Madrid at the beginning of January with my sister, hoping to see a game. Definitely doing a tour of the Bernabeu. Could get really lucky and get to a Real game and then a Athletico game too.
Tel Aviv? racism... I only have 1-2 junk meals a week normally but I was on holiday and not really in a mood to hang about. if I passed a fast food joint I grabbed a bite for 20 mins and moved on pronto. one of the times I went to burger king was just before I went to the nou camp. grabbed and quick bit and a drink and headed there. I always filled up BIG TIME on the breakfast at the my hotel as well. had to economise. I certainly did enough walking about on that trip to burn it off. I probably walked 6-10 miles a day.
