September 2022 for 4 years. Finished bottom of Nations League qualifying group in 2022 (albeit in a tough group), had a very poor World Cup and then a stuttering Euros qualifying campaign, in which we ultimately failed.

We're a Host and I believe have been awarded the Opening game at the next Euros, so the prospect of not qualifying again maybe was a factor in bringing things to a head.

Time is right for me, seems like Roberts and Bellamy are the early front runners.

Has been under a lot of pressure in recent games. A penalty shootout cost us a place at the Euro's, the margins are so small.

Anyway thank you to Page for getting us to a World Cup even if we were absolutely shite, something I never thought I would see us do.

    Scraping the barrel with Bellamy.

The bizarre world of football. Get relegated with Burnley and the manager ends up at Bayern and Bellamy gets to manage his national team.

I'm not entirely sure what to make of this appointment.

I think Bellamy will demand high standards, the right attitude and will potentially directly help younger players with his knowledge and experience gained at the top-level. However, he's unexperienced (as was Gary Speed to be fair) and clearly there are question marks over his temperament. Whether his life experience and personal challenges have somewhat mellowed and matured him over time remains to be seen - I sense they have but this will be his highest profile management role so will certainly test that.

may be doomed to fail, not exactly a wealth of (player) resources and expectations will be there to beat some of the perceived lesser nations regularly

I think he'll ultimately be judged by qualification to tournaments and if we qualify whether we can get out of the group stage, or at least be competitive. We have a fairly decent crop of youngish players and we should be aspiring to now regularly participate at major touraments.

isn't complacency or sense of "entitlement", but qualifying is so wishy washy these days and England high ranked most of the time they'd have to be total crap to not qualify so that should be almost a given

groups equally now there are 24 teams qualifying and that's near half of Europe, the quality is low, 9 times out of 10 England should reach the knockouts.

how far you get thereafter is "the luck of the draw" and GS had plenty, weakened Colombia (no Jam Ez) on pens, Sweden (no Zlatan?), Denmark (not up to much past 1992), Ukraine (decent but no great shakes), Swiss (on pens), Slovakia (just about), an out of sorts Holland about the pick of the progression/positive results

England across the years, and what many use to place GS on a pedestal :

1990 lost on pens in the semis to eventual winners (West) Germany
1992 went out in a group, effectively the QFs, containing France, Sweden (hosts) and Denmark (drew, went on to be champions)
1996 came out of a group with Swiss and Holland, beat Spain on pens in QF, lost to very good German side on pens
1998 lost to Argentina on pens (who lost to Holland who lost to Brazil who lost to France)
2002 lost to champions Brazil 2-1
2004 lost to HOSTS Portugal in the QFs on pens
2006 lost to Portugal in the QFs on pens
2010 lost to Germany who lost their semi to eventual winners Spain
2012 lost to Italy on pens, Italy lost the final (badly mind)
2014 not the disaster it may seem, lost to good sides in Italy and Uruguay in a tough group, Costa Rica also not bad (beat Italy to go out of group and lost only on pens to Holland in QF

1994, and 2008 were disasters in not qualifying, poor manager selection, 2000 was a group stage disaster with KK in charge - he didn't love that! 2016 was more of the same, poor manager in RH losing to Iceland (the country, probably would have lost to the supermarket too!)

like with GS the stumbling block in many tournaments was facing a top side, only four were categorical undeniable failures, 10 though were no better or worse than GS managed albeit he had a good side and draws (twice, home advantage in one competition) to push forward and get further

now had GS been beating Brazil, Spain, France etc can see the praise as worthy, and I don't mean in Nations League. Expected Results if there is such a thing he'd be about there or below
