Does Berhalter have to go? From the outside it looks like he's done a good job - winning the Gold cup and the Nations League and getting into the last 16 of the World Cup. Intrigued as to the reasons he seems likely to be getting the sack?
Won those, then finished 3rd in qualifying by goal differential. Selection of the squad was odd (bringing Morris over Pepi or Pefock), leaving us with Saregent as our only (sort of) real #9, so we struggled to score anything, and leaving Reyna on the bench when (apparently) he is fully fit and the only one outside of Pulisic who can actually do something on the ball. He fails upwards, and got shown up by a real manager.
it's not necessarily that he's done a bad job, but rather is there someone who can do more with these players. you can look at his record and say he's done well, but up until recently, the sides we've faced weren't the caliber of england or the netherlands. we need to be able to score goals against tougher sides You can perhaps assume that, by 2026,we'll have the best squad we've had in a long time, the next piece of the puzzle is to bring in someone who can upgrade our tactics and coaching
Yes. And don't get me wrong I like Pellegrino Matarazzo. A competent coach and a very likeable and educated person, Stuttgart's team in the last 2 seasons were often beaten "under value" and had also some injuries problems. If I had the choice between him and Jesse Marsch, I would take Matarazzo. btw: I didn't know that he was born in America. Up until now I always thought he's italian born (must be his name )
It's an interesting one, with the World Cup being hosted there in 2026 it is surely tempting to throw a big offer at a big name European or South American manager to work with the squad. It isn't a surefire way to achieve much but it would give them that extra level of glamour going into it. Maybe give the assistant role to an American with a view for them to take over from them afterwards for continuity.
Assuming he's still going the USA job could be perfect for Bielsa? Four years of meticulous planning and coaching under him could have them looking strong in 2026.
I read this morning on ESPN that Berhalter is working on an extension. But if he did leave, do you think Bielsa would be able to implement his style when only working with the guys a limited time? His high intensity style would burn players out in a tournament imo.
bielsa will be in his 70's by the next world cup. and if "looking strong" means counter attack with zero regard for defending like it did at leeds, then i'll pass.
Who knows, but he held the Argentina job for six years and would certainly make them a more exciting team to watch. If any team has energy in midfield it's the USA.
Sounds like the reason we didn't see much of reyna is attitude and discipline problems. Supposedly there was even a vote within camp to send him home or not. Too bad, really, as we could have used his help.
