It's a game we rarely win, I can't remember the last time we've won at St James' Park. I'd have been just as delighted had we won 1-0. My point on the weak sides wasn't necessarily aimed at yourselves but I've heard it mentioned so many times over the last 10 games. City drew at Norwich a couple of games ago, Chelsea couldn't beat West Brom from a winning position in the week, Arsenal dropped points at home to Manchester United. Why does it matter Newcastle have been crap? It's our biggest win of the season and we've played far bigger crap than Newcastle, we can't even point to a 4 goal winning margin in Europe and the sides in that are as poor as you'll see.
Seeing as though every Spurs fan I asked said that we we're going to lose it was a huge game for us. Ok it might be a weak Newcastle side but the confidence that will give our players will be paramount for the rest of the season. Especially Chadli, he has had a terrible start here and people (including me) are saying that we need to get rid of him in the summer unless he starts improving. If we would have lost that game then I think a lot of people would've said that our season is over with regards to finishing top four. Plus it kept Manchester United away, which at this point of the season it is a must for us to have any chance finishing top 4.
Everyone was shit today, so don't use it as a stick to beat Bentaleb with. I'm not sure why that relates to my statement that he was superb against Newcastle either.
How's Kyle Walker been this season? Seen probably about 10 Spurs games this season, and in some of them he's been poor and in others he's been pretty good, so don't know what to think.
Until Adebayor morphed into The Holy Lord Above Us, Walker was probably our player of the season, by virtue of being the only player who was consistently decent. He's not hit the heights of 2011/2012 when he won the PL YPOTY award, but he's certainly been an important player for us. You notice how important he is mostly when he doesn't play. He is so fit and just bombs up and down all game. When Naughton plays, you notice the difference in width down the right. Tl;dr - he's been 'good'.
At the turn of the year I had Kyle Walker down as my player of the season, but his form has gone a bit down again and there's been some injuries as well. So at the moment I'm leaning more towards Hugo Lloris, while also considering whether Adebayor's performance under Sherwood is enough to give him the vote despite not even playing for the first part of the season.
I have been disappointed in Walker this season. It's not that he has played badly, but he has not played to his full potential. In fact I can't really think of any real contributions he has made. I can't really remember any assist's or goals. I will give him credit, his defending has improved, but our fullbacks I believe have to take a large portion of blame for our poor attacking play. Neither Walker, Rose Naughton or Vertonghen have done a good job of providing width for the team. We have played inverted wingers a lot and have struggled.
As sad as it is I think Adebayor will win it, crazy given he didn't play until the middle of December. No real standouts for the 'player of the season'. 'Least disappointing player of the season' seems more apt this year.
I think that's a bit harsh, to be honest. There is a standout - once given the chance by Sherwood, Adebayor has been simply inspirational. I find it difficult to agree with the common perception of Ade as a lazy, couldn't give a flying f*ck player; he's always played a traditional striker role, and that often means hanging up front and doing the best part of nothing until you get service. Lineker never tracked back, or looked remotely interested until the ball landed in the 6 yard box, but we never slated him for it. The difference under Sherwood is that Ade's clearly been told to track back and take a part in the bigger picture - now he's doing that, he's twice the player he was under our previous managers.
personally I don't think walkers been particularly great this season. better than last but still nowhere near his first season with us IMO. no one bar adebayor & lloris has stood out. eriksen has had a couple of very good spurts here and there. townsend was superb for about 2 months then faded. as I still love to watch dembele dribble/dance his way round the pitch BUT due to his lack of goals/creativity I guess its hard to say hes been great.
Adebayour has been pretty good to be fair, Lloris deserves a mention too, but apart from these two everyone else has been very average, good enough for the top six, but not good enough for the top four, same old story really.
I can't imagine you've seen a single match where his defensive work has been praiseworthy. He sure can run though
weve all been absolutely shit, adebayor should win player of the season which is mental reallly but hes the only one as it stands who can say theyve done their ability justice. i still dont rate him too highly in terms of technique but hes earned some respect from me at least with his desire. when adebayor is showing the most hunger in your team you know something is rotten at the core. i think lloris has had his fair share of dodgy moments, one of our better players for sure but i really wouldnt be too gutted if he left tbh. world class keeper on his day but replaceable for sure. big windfall from psg for him and begovic from stoke and id be more than happy with that . very very depressing, we face a seismic week now while we are downtrodden and crestfallen we have two games that could lift our spirits from the doldrums and have the lillywhite fervour shooting out of our hearts once more. get a result thursday and keep the unlikely european dream alive, beat the scum on sunday and suddenly my battered hopes and dreams will ignite again. fate has sliced us cruelly one more but we of spurs no matter how many times we are kicked and beaten feel that singing bluebird in our heart, we feel that glory glory aura in our hearts and when im marchng in at the lane sunday as we blow the roof of our glorious home with a gusto and frenzied passion that the woolwich nomads could only dream of mustering, ill know that no footballing setback will ever attack the irrevocable knowledge that this club is too special, it holds something to resonant to ever be silenced for too long!
I'd be gutted if Lloris left tbh. I'm not disputing Begovic is a fantastic keeper but I think there's a difference between the two systems. How often do you see Begovic play the sweeper role? Half of Lloris' so called mistakes are due to the high line and having to bail out our defenders. I'd happily see most go but we won't get a better keeper at White Hart Lane. Even if we do I'd fancy them to make as many mistakes for the same reasons.
lloris is defo in the top 10 world keepers IMO. maybe even in the top 5. i'd personally rather him than hart, casillas and valdes who I think are all over-rated. best sweeper keepr I've ever seen. he does make some clangers but overall hes top drawer.
yeh to be fair he is certainly a unique keeper and his speed off his line is incredible at times, it can also be costly aswell and theres been a few times where hes ****d it up. oddly even tho i think lloris is the better keeper id probably feel safer with begovic. does that make sense? who knows i dont mind cos i know i can tell you guys anything x
Begovic would be no better with the current system though. It's not that Lloris is making mistakes with his shot stopping or much else. The mistakes are coming from having to sweep up the high line. I've not seen a keeper do it better than Lloris, he'll make f**k ups but that's inevitable with how frequently he's having to sweep up. I'm not saying Lloris is perfect but if you put Lloris in Stoke's defence you wouldn't be seeing the same mistakes because they're set to defend in a different manner. Put Begovic in our net and I'm not sure he'd be doing any better with the high line.
yeh i guess thats a good point, i wanna keep hold of him for sure but if PSG offered big bucks id cash in although that would add fuel to the "selling club" fire levy has attracted.
