    Volcano - 3/10

I love 80s/90s action movies and especially if they hold some nostalgia for me. Dante's Peak, Anaconda, Face Off, to randomly name a few terrible movies.

This film is more ridiculous and farfetched than 90s Nicolas Cage. It's so bad and not even in a good way.

Face Off is a classic and Travolta and Cage’s finest moments. How dare you!

Anaconda is a classic... I'm sorry I can't even begin to defend it as a film, it is shite.

I agree with you, I feel I need to make a public apology and make myself clear! I was trying to say that Dante's Peak, Face Off & Anaconda are all classics. Unfortunately, Volcano does not fall into that bracket.

    Sorry for any offensive caused.

    Kiss Me Deadly
I have been on a Noir movies watch, largely because most of them are now available (in the public domain) on YouTube for free. I kept hearing the name of this movie in particular as it featured on a lot of lists & inspired the likes of Spielberg, Tarantino, Scorsese, etc.

I can see why this movie is loved so much. It was clearly ahead of its times. It was willing to push boundaries & has a plot (especially the end or rather the reveal) which you wouldn't expect for those times. It almost feels like a B movie at times with the acting & dialogues, but not in a bad way.

    I absolutely loved it.

    Eight Men Out
Based on the Chicago White Sox players who conspired to lose the 1919 World Series. Has quite a stacked starcast & is quite well made. I never got into American sports, but this was one of the better movies on baseball.

    The Assessment
A Sci-Fi where parenthood is decided after a seven day assessment of the couples by the authorities. It's deliberately shot in a way to make you uncomfortable. Elizabeth Olsen & Alicia Vikander put terrific performances. Quite a decent addition to Sci-Fi movies.

Yeah, loads of old goodies in public domain now. Helping me brush up on old Noirs.

Just watched this on YouTube, apart from its awful female characters who are all typically 1950s style of one-dimensional it's an enjoyable film, as you said its subject matter was certainly ahead of its time. Loved the ending, proper b&w special effects! Good film.

    Flight Risk [2025]

Basically a 3 hander for 90% of the film, they do quite well in a claustrophobic light aircraft cabin to keep things interesting and at times quite gripping. Worth a watch but not a classic.

    American Psycho [2000]

Christian Bale in probably the first adult role that defined him, I'd never seen this before primarily due to the reportedly 'depraved' book on which it's based. Director Mary Harron captures Bale's character's cruelty and sadism without depicting too much of it on the screen whilst leaving the viewer in no doubt what has taken place, and at the same time gives an insight into the 80s yuppie world of Wall Street and all its excesses. I haven't read the book but the ending of the film is brave in the way it's inconclusive.

Just a little over one hour long. Quite an interesting concept. Very basic but well done Noir. I didn't know what to make of Ann Savage's performance. She is good as the unlikeble, irritating woman but at times over the top & hammy.
    Decent flick.

    See How They Run
This was silly in a lovely way. Visually it feels like a Wes Anderson flick. I liked the humour, even if it was simple & silly. It is sort of a homage to Agatha Christie or rather her work The Mousetrap, with a healthy dose of the ridicule as well.

It's well acted, especially Saoirse Ronan & Sam Rockwell, though the latter didn't even bother to put on an accent.
If you like Wes Anderson's work or murder mystery comedies like Knives Out or Only Murder in the Building, you will enjoy this.

    Ronin ( 1998 )

An all time favourite of mine.

A group of robbers are on a mission to steal a briefcase in France.

The car chases are the best you will see.

Not watched it yet then do it.

Watched this on Saturday night. Blimey, each to their own but that score is extremely generous. If I was Wahlberg, Dockery or Grace I would want this film credit to disappear like MH370.

I thought you Australians used Rolf Harris' laptop as a reference to something that's inexplicably vanished?

    The Sinners.

Typical Vampire fare in the mould of Dusk till Dawn but with considerably less white actors ,but still a good bit a work for the extras who were drafted in to play Klan members before being riddled with bullets. I mean ,I know it's a film about a Juke joint in Mississippi ,but for f*cks sake it's about being hemmed in and surrounded by the voracious appetite of Vampires that loiter outside ?

I know it's a harsh review ,but it might have survived my scathing critique if it had ended without throwing in the usual tropes ? Jack O'Connell provides the one saving grace for this film with a positively baleful portrayal of Remmick the creator of the assembled fanged throng. He even gets to sing the best song and dance the best dance with a rather disarming Irish jig, which is no mean feat when you have a juke joint throwing out the Blues into the wee small hours.

In summary this could have been so much better without the utterly ridiculous last ten mins and would have possibly prevented O'Connell collecting all the plaudits ,but he does and fully merits the acclaim for single handedly doing his level and talented best to rescue this film.
It's worth watching for O'Connell's performance and for his renditions of old folk songs.
