Those were my thoughts when I heard the news, unless he thinks the defection will help him on whatever he chooses to do next. I doubt that he's suddenly developed a conscience.

He's (again according to Wes Streeting) returning full time to the NHS, so perhaps this is him pretending to 'see the light' before facing his NHS colleagues full time again, as if they will forget his previous Tory voting record.

This is quite funny because all the mouth breathers (yes you, RDS) like to go on about staying in safe countries, and the people arriving from France have no reason to be coming here except to steal our jobs, benefits, and corner shops....

and yet we are refusing to accept the return of asylum seekers who travel, via the UK, into Ireland.

UK will not accept return of asylum seekers from Ireland, Rishi Sunak says
Rishi Sunak has said the UK will not accept the return of asylum seekers from Ireland and dismissed the prospect of a deal with Dublin.

The prime minister doubled down on his Rwanda deportation plan and appeared to reject any deal with the Irish government, which is alarmed at asylum seekers entering the republic from Northern Ireland.

The comments on Monday, three days before the Conservatives face voters in local elections, undercut an attempt to de-escalate what has emerged as the biggest threat to British-Irish relations since Brexit.

Asked if the UK could agree a returns scheme with Ireland, Sunak told ITV: “We’re not. I’m not interested in that. We’re not going to accept returns from the EU via Ireland when the EU doesn’t accept returns back to France where illegal migrants are coming from. Of course we’re not gonna do that. I’m determined to get our Rwanda scheme up and running because I want a deterrent.”

Hang on, I thought the EU were adamant that they cannot/will not enter into deals on an individual country basis regarding the return or otherwise of so-called "illegal" immigrants. That's their prerogative and is fair enough, but such conditions are either in place or they aren't, and if they are then it has to work both ways?

In this situation it is a bit different since it involves the Irish border. France and the UK having a hard border doesn't risk enflaming a defacto war.

I suspect he is heading back to be a full time GP and wants to save face with some people furious at the state of the NHS over the past 15 years but also doesn't want to quit parliament early and give up 6 months salary.

I for one won't be forgetting he was part of the Lansley reforms during the coalition

Possibly, but the main issue is immigrants into/out of the EU/UK?

They are going hopping mad over here about it and the insulting way sunak has acted plus how cleverly basically ignored his counterpart at the ni council thing thsts going on.

He has basically totally blanked the Irish justice minister and now I'm sure there will be more about this depending on the result of the local elections.

If sunak is ousted or a ge is called they have basically now annoyed the only people who might be a route to future eu relations.

I'm sure the Irish government will be out in 10 months anyway so starmer will just have to beg the French for concessions

The Irish government have said that people are basically getting through France to the UK or landing in UK airports then waiting for their decision and then just going to Belfast and taking a bus to Dublin to claim asylum here.

They say the UK is a safe country so if they land in the UK first from wherever they should go back.

Sunak says he wants a deterent, said it two or three times to stop people even coming.

There's over 1000 refugees/ asylum seekers sleeping rough in Dublin as there's no more capacity. (Or not willing to put any more) so dump another 5000 or 10000 due to an open border who just decide the ferry and bus is an option rather than a potential plane to Rwanda and it'll be chaos in Dublin.

But most of all this is also posturing from finnan fail to try position for the ge here.

Tough on asylum seekers is suddenly vital here for fear of sinn fein.

I reckon that the ROI government would rather eat its own shit than do anything at all that favours the UK since Brexit.

Which is exactly the argument Sunak's fascistic government is making about the boats coming from France, but it seems the EU disagrees.

It seems they've finally got someone to Rwanda and it only took a £3,000 payout to get him to agree to go.

UK sends first asylum seeker to Rwanda under voluntary deportation scheme (ft.com)

I imagine these traffickers will love knowing that their targets are arriving into Rwanda with £3k in their back pocket

Can anybody apply for this? I'll take the £3k and then I can use a part of that to pay for a flight home and I'll still be quids in
