Now, the music forum is one of the best around here. As for something to discuss, how about the top 100 songs according to Billboard? Discuss as much as you want, just don't spoil the rest of the list Edit: playlist
100. You’re So Vain Artist: Carly Simon Album: No Secrets Released: 8/11/1972 US chart peak: 1 UK chart peak: 3 FF ranking: N/A The song is a critical profile of a self-absorbed lover about whom Simon asserts, "You're so vain, you probably think this song is about you." The distinctive bass guitar intro is played by Klaus Voormann. The strings were arranged by Simon and orchestrated by Paul Buckmaster, and Simon plays piano on the track. The song was a No. 1 hit in the US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, and reached No. 4 in Ireland and South Africa. Entering at No. 99 on the Billboard Hot 100 on 2 December 1972, the song took five more weeks to rise to the top of the chart, where it stayed for the first three weeks of 1973. It was replaced by Stevie Wonder's "Superstition" and spent the next month in the runner-up spot. It also spent two weeks at the top of the Easy Listening chart in early 1973, her first No. 1 on either chart. "You're So Vain" was Simon's breakthrough hit in the United Kingdom, reaching No. 3 on the UK chart on its original release in 1973. My personal thoughts: Pretty good singing, and song. Don’t particularly get the lyrics but there are some juicy metaphors in there. Way too slow for me. Would listen occasionally
Is this song really already 50 years old? Always had it for an 80s song. Anyway...I liked Carly. Also tbh I was always a bit "irritated" by her mouth. In Germany we have a saying for people who have a "broader" mouth : "Die kann aber auch den Spargel quer fressen...." (no translation) A 14 year old interesting in music from the "stone age" (for him not for me )? There's still hope for this world, it seems
The whole reason that this song is on the list and has remained in people's thoughts is the speculation on who the lyrics refer to. Who is she writing the song about? Loads of speculation.
I like hearing what people on here like, rather than just “here’s a list” x Edit: Also the Billboard list is American, a country almost nobody on here is from which makes it much less interesting imo
Well, it's a crap list full of crap songs (many of which I don't even recognise) but that doesn't mean it has no place in our world.
Hey... If UK had a version of this I would gladly do it instead And I don't recognise like 90 of them
There's loads of UK versions of the list. I'm not advocating them. There's plenty of crap in those based on sales rather than opinions. It's all about opinions I suppose. I've no particular interest in the song. Interesting but useless fact - Carly's dad was a piano salesman who started what became the US's biggest publisher (Simon & Schuster) because his aunt did crosswords and couldn't find a book of crosswords from her favourite NY newspaper.
As is the 3rd. Both strike more of a chord with me than just sales. But my opinion is no more valuable than people with zero musical taste. The second is based on sales but that ultimately comes down to the opinions of the buyers.
I didn't ask for the "Best German Songs" in my last post, only mentioned that in this list there are no Chart placing for Germany only for US-UK (btw: I'd never say that any shit of Modern Talking is "best" . Horrible songs (Dieter Bohlen is a nuisance). At least some proper songs in it, too, though (mostly Rammstein for me )
Musical taste is subjective. My 2nd favourite artist (who I'm coincidentally listening to right now) has been compared to a frog before
I always thought it was assumed (correctly) that Carly’s lyrics were aimed at Neil Sedaka? …….goes off to Google it… Hmmm, appears not. Jagger or Taylor?
