I keep thinking about getting one but tbh I wouldn't have used it yet this year, what do you do with the exhaust hose just stick it out the window?
Yeah that's probably the biggest drawback with them other than the expensive electricity, what to do with the hose. You have to buy these window seals that stick onto your window with velcro with a zip in the middle which you place the hose through and then zip it up tight to hold the hose in place. The seal stops hot air from outside from coming back in. If you just throw the hose out of the open window without one of these seals it doesn't work anywhere near as well and you'll waste loads of electricity because the cold air coming out of the air con unit will be balanced out by the hot air coming back in through the window. Like leaving the patio door open on holiday while the air con is on, it's pointless. In my current house my bedroom has a massive bay window but has these handy little square windows in the top corner. They conceal the pipe much better and the small opening means you only need to use a small seal and you get the minimum amount of heat leaching back in compared with a large window opening. So even though my bedroom is much bigger than in my old terraced house, because that house used to have one big window that opened outwards towards the street it was a bitch to seal off so the room didn't cool as quickly and warmed up quicker afterwards. And looked ugly like I was running a cannabis factory .
I only have small 30cm x 20 cm windows but just watched a video and seem a pain to fit, also to find the right one as all seem to be for big windows.
You just cut them down with scissors and just use the most central part of the seal. I ordered the smallest size I could find, crudely measured it around the perimeter of the area that needed sealing then cut it with scissors. Then stuck the velcro strip on, attached the seal and job done. The smaller the window the easier it is and sounds like your windows are a similar size to mine which is perfect. I agree the big windows are a faff to do and look ugly as hell.
I feel the same way about convertibles in this country. My mate years ago wanted one and I talked him out of it. You’re lucky if you’re got the roof down for 2 weeks in total over the year The rest of the time you’re left with a roof that can easily be cut open (I know you can get coupe cabriolets now with folding hard tops but he didn’t want one of them) and sounds horrendous in the rain. Pointless.
You'd be surprised how many warm nights there are a year, even if the weather outside isn't actually sunny. On an average summer I reckon I probably use it about a month's worth of nights. It just stays in the corner of the bay window always ready to use when needed. I used to say the same thing and never would have bought one. But I ended up acquiring it from a mate for free and now I couldn't go back and would have to replace it if it breaks. Agree about convertibles though . A nice luxury if you're rich and can have a big load of cars in a garage that you can fetch out for individual occasions. But for a normal person, pointless.
Just caved and got a cheap portable AC, I run hot as it is and **** me the last few summers have been torture. My sleep is bad at the best of times and these last few weeks I must be averaging 2 hours a night.
A wee bit cooler but still could not get a good night's kip, I ended up lying on the sofa in the lounge with the fan beside me listening to Radio Gold on the TV radio, if anything, the combination of the fan and music plus the lounge window wide open helped me sleep.
It's a lot cooler so far thank clux, heavy rain on the forecast so that should keep the temp. down...I hope.
Been a very muggy and clammy day even though the sun has been hiding behind grey clouds. Wish it would pour down so we get fresh air. Be a nightmare trying to sleep tonight.
It has not been a bad morning so far, it may be around 180 at the moment but we have our second-floor flat window open and there is a lovely cool breeze coming in from the direction of the waters of Leith and Leith Harbour.
Horrible day for me, our neighbour downstairs decided to cut her lawn, so, that's our flat window closed otherwise the smell of cut grass would set my hay fever off, fluff the heat, wish it was snowing.
How the hell is it 31c lol? Is office at home? close the curtains and windows if it is, my front room is only 19.5c lol. 44% humidity is nice and low though, will be higher tomorrow.
My office is an extension off the back of the house with patio doors and glass - there are no curtains, none of the glass is windows - basically my office I work in is a greenhouse
